Bear Story

Going camping again reminded me of something that happened when I was a kid. Every year as a family, we'd go camping in Superior National Forest in our little camper. One year, we were warned that bears were in the area so not to leave our food out, make noise when we go through the woods, etc. They were black bears so they were probably more afraid of you.

My sister thought she'd play a joke on me and pretend she spotted a bear. As we were coming back from a walk, she pointed into the woods and said, "look at the bear!"

My dad peered into the woods and said "hey, there really is a bear there."

My sister screamed, pushed me out of the way (toward the bear), jumped into the camper and locked the door.

I never did get to see the bear before it ran away.
